Pack your pixel skis and head for the mountains in Toyota's exciting retro themed road trip
Connecting with a new era of drivers through a vintage style, Toyota invites audiences to test drive their 2024 vehicles in a classic arcade driving game. Players can jump behind the pixel wheel to collect tokens, avoid potholes, and reach one of three destinations with the most points to land a spot on Toyota's coveted leaderboard.
Challenge
Capturing the distinct look of an 8bit video game, while retaining the detail of craftsmanship that goes into a Toyota vehicle, wasn’t going to be an easy Sunday drive. Each selectable car needed to retain enough fidelity in the graphics to provide a true representation of the actual models sold in Toyota dealerships, as well the available color options for each. To top it all off, an accessory would be fixed to the roof of the player's car based on the final destination chosen. All of these criteria needed to be built into the game before our wheels even hit the asphalt.
Solution
Taking inspiration from Toyota’s online customizing experience, we realized the best approach to take was a pixelation filter. We applied the filter to the vehicles our 3D model team created, allowing us to control the pixel count while providing gameplay that offered more depth and complexity for the player. This quick turn solution took things from first to fifth gear, fast!
Impact
14Four took this game from radiator to rims, establishing the game's mechanics and style across each touchpoint a player would experience. From early concepting and UI designs, to 3D modeling and development of the cars and levels, our team raced to deliver an enjoyable driving experience players could play again and again to beat their high score or try new cars. So what are you waiting for? Buckle up, pick your tunes and hit the gas!

“We collaborated with the incredibly talented team at 14Four. They not only partnered with us on the process but brought their own unique flare to the game that we loved.”
